Why Autumn Is the Most Underrated Season for Outdoor Living
There's a strange habit a lot of us have in the UK. The moment September rolls round, we quietly give up on the garden. The cushions get packed away, the parasol comes down, and the whole space gets mentally filed under "next year."
Which is a shame, really, because autumn might be the best season for outdoor living that nobody talks about.
We Pack Away the Garden Too Soon
Summer gets all the attention. Barbecues, long evenings, everyone crammed onto one lawn hoping it doesn't rain. But summer in Britain is also unpredictable, often too hot to sit out comfortably, and over before you've really settled into it.
Autumn is different. The light softens. The air cools down just enough to feel fresh rather than freezing. And there's something about a crisp October evening outside, wrapped in a blanket with a warm drink, that summer simply cannot replicate.
The problem isn't that autumn is a bad season for the garden. It's that most gardens simply aren't set up for it.
The Case for Autumn Outdoor Living
Better Light, Better Views
Autumn light has a quality photographers spend years chasing. Lower sun, longer shadows, that warm golden colour in the late afternoon. Your garden genuinely looks different this time of year, often better.
Cooler Air Means Longer Sessions Outside
Nobody wants to sit in a garden at 28 degrees for hours. But at 14 degrees, with the right setup, you can happily stay outdoors for an evening without feeling like you need to escape indoors.
It Feels Cosy Rather Than Effortful
There's a particular kind of comfort in being outside when it's a bit chilly but you're prepared for it. Think fire pits, thick throws, mulled something in hand. It's a completely different feeling to summer, and honestly, a lot of people find it more relaxing.
How to Set Your Garden Up for Autumn
If you want to actually use your outdoor space this season, rather than just look at it through the window, a few small changes make a big difference.
1. Bring in Some Warmth
This is the one thing that makes or breaks autumn outdoor living. Without heat, most people last about twenty minutes before heading in.
- A wood burning fire pit gives you both warmth and something to gather round, which tends to keep people outside far longer than they planned
- Gas or electric patio heaters are a good shout if you want warmth without the smoke or the faff of wood
- Even a simple chiminea in a sheltered corner can transform a small patio
We've put together a Fire Pits & Outdoor Heating Collection if you're weighing up which option suits your space.
2. Think About Shelter, Not Just Warmth
Heat only gets you so far if you're sitting in the wind or getting caught in a shower. A pergola, gazebo, or even a well positioned parasol with sides can make an enormous difference to how usable your garden feels once the weather turns unpredictable.

3. Layer in Some Proper Lighting
Evenings draw in fast from September onwards, so lighting stops being decorative and starts being essential. Warm, low level lighting (string lights, lanterns, solar stake lights along a path) makes the garden feel intentional rather than abandoned once the sun goes down.
4. Add Texture and Softness
Swap anything lightweight or summery for cushions, throws, and rugs in warmer tones and heavier fabrics. It sounds like a small thing, but it's often the difference between a garden that feels bare in October and one that feels genuinely inviting.
A Simple Autumn Ready Checklist
- Cover or store away anything not built for damp weather
- Add one clear heat source, even a small one
- Check your outdoor lighting actually works and reaches where you sit
- Bring in cushions or throws that can handle a bit of moisture
- Clear gutters and drains near your patio before the wet weather properly sets in
Don't Let the Garden Go Quiet Just Yet
Autumn doesn't need to be the season your outdoor space shuts down. With a bit of warmth, some decent shelter, and lighting that actually makes the space feel welcoming, it can easily become the season you use it the most.
