Perfect Jacket Potatoes on the Fire Pit
🥔 Perfect Jacket Potatoes on the Fire Pit

Cooking over an outdoor fire pit is one of life's simple pleasures. There's something special about gathering around the flames while delicious food slowly cooks, filling the air with comforting aromas. Jacket potatoes are a brilliant choice—they're easy to prepare, require very little attention, and develop wonderfully crispy skins with a light, fluffy centre.
For the best results, cook your potatoes over glowing embers rather than large flames. Wrapping them in foil helps them cook evenly while locking in moisture, making them the perfect side dish or a satisfying meal on their own.
🛒 Ingredients (Serves 4)
- 4 large baking potatoes
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tsp sea salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
Optional toppings
- Butter
- Grated mature Cheddar cheese
- Sour cream
- Crispy bacon pieces
- Baked beans
- Chopped spring onions
- Tuna mayonnaise
- Coleslaw
- Chilli con carne
🧑🍳 Method
- Prepare the potatoes. Wash and scrub the potatoes thoroughly, then dry them well. Prick each potato several times with a fork.
- Season. Rub each potato with olive oil and sprinkle generously with sea salt and a little black pepper.
- Wrap in foil. Wrap each potato tightly in aluminium foil, ensuring there are no gaps where heat can escape.
- Prepare the fire pit. Allow the fire to burn down until you have a bed of hot glowing embers. Avoid placing the potatoes directly into large flames, as they may burn before the inside is fully cooked.
- Cook. Place the foil-wrapped potatoes around or just beneath the hot embers. Cook for approximately 60–90 minutes, carefully turning every 20–30 minutes to ensure even cooking. Cooking time will depend on the size of the potatoes and the heat of the fire.
- Check they're ready. Carefully unwrap one potato and insert a skewer or knife into the centre. It should slide in easily with no resistance.
- Serve. Slice each potato open, fluff the inside with a fork, add a knob of butter and pile on your favourite toppings.
