Why January is Actually the Perfect Time to Sort Your Outdoor Space
Share
Most people think January is all about hibernating indoors with the heating cranked up and a cuppa permanently glued to your hand. And look, I get it. The weather outside is hardly screaming "garden party," is it? But here's the thing I've learnt after years of helping people create brilliant outdoor spaces: January might just be the smartest month to get your garden, patio, or terrace sorted.
I know what you're thinking. Why on earth would anyone think about outdoor furniture when it's barely light by four o'clock and you need three layers just to put the bins out? Well, stick with me, because there are some genuinely good reasons why winter planning beats spring scrambling every single time.

Getting Ahead of the Rush
Right now, whilst everyone else is still working through their Christmas selection boxes and pretending they'll actually use that gym membership, you've got the pick of the crop. Come March, when the sun makes its first proper appearance and everyone simultaneously remembers they've got a garden, you'll be competing with half the neighbourhood for the same fire pit or dining set.
I've seen it happen year after year. Someone spots the first daffodil, decides they want to eat al fresco this summer, and then discovers that the gorgeous eight-seater they had their eye on won't arrive until July. By then, they've already had mates round twice and ended up with everyone balanced on camping chairs that should've been retired in 2015.
Shopping now means you're not at the mercy of lead times when they're at their longest. You can take your time choosing exactly what you want, safe in the knowledge it'll be sitting pretty in your garden long before BBQ season properly kicks off.
January Sales Are Absolutely Real
Let's talk about money, because that's usually what holds people back from creating the outdoor space they actually want. January sales aren't just for trainers and telly's. Plenty of outdoor living retailers shift their stock now because, well, most people aren't thinking about patio heaters when they're defrosting their car every morning.
This is when you can genuinely save serious money on quality pieces that'll last you years. That corten steel fire pit you've been eyeing up since last summer? Probably got a decent chunk off right now. The pizza oven that seemed like a bit of an indulgence at full price? Might suddenly feel a lot more reasonable.

And here's the thing about outdoor furniture and heating – it's not like fashion where last season's stuff is somehow inferior. A well-made piece is a well-made piece, whether you bought it in January or June. The weather doesn't change that.
Planning Time is Precious
When you're not rushing to get something delivered before your daughter's birthday BBQ or your partner's work drinks, you can actually think properly about what you need. This is proper planning time. You can measure your space without getting dive-bombed by wasps. You can sit inside with a brew and really consider how you want to use your outdoor area.
Do you want somewhere for lazy Sunday morning coffees? You're looking at a smaller bistro set, maybe with a stylish bioethanol fire for those cooler evenings. Planning on hosting regular gatherings? You need something more substantial – a decent-sized table and definitely some proper heating so people don't abandon ship at half seven when the sun disappears.
Winter gives you perspective. You're not blinded by that one gorgeous weekend in April where everything seems possible and you convince yourself you'll be eating outside every night. You can be realistic about how much space you've actually got and how you'll genuinely use it.
Testing Your Heating Solutions
Here's something people don't always consider: if you're buying patio heaters or fire features, winter is actually the perfect time to test them properly. You'll know straight away if your new setup delivers enough warmth or if you need to think about additional heating.

There's nothing worse than hosting your first spring gathering, temperature dropping as the evening progresses, and discovering your heating solution isn't quite up to the job. Everyone's being polite about it, but you can see them inching closer to the patio doors. By sorting it now, you can genuinely test what works before it matters.
Getting Your Space Ready
January and February also give you time to prepare your outdoor area properly. If your patio's seen better days, you've got time to get it sorted before everything arrives. Need to think about positioning for your new fire pit? You can work it out without pressure.
Maybe you're realising you need some extra lighting, or that your current outdoor furniture has properly had its day. You can deal with all of this methodically rather than in a blind panic the week before Easter when you've invited the in-laws round.
Corten Steel Weathers Beautifully
If you're considering corten steel pieces – and honestly, you should be because they're absolutely stunning – winter installation is brilliant. Corten steel develops its protective rust patina when exposed to the elements. Starting this process in winter means by the time spring arrives, your pieces will already have that gorgeous, rich finish that makes them look like they've always belonged in your space.

It's essentially letting nature do its thing whilst you're not desperately wanting to use the space anyway. Come spring, everything looks established rather than brand new, which always feels more sophisticated somehow.
The Enjoyment Factor
Finally, and this might sound daft, but there's something quite lovely about sitting indoors on a miserable January evening, browsing gorgeous outdoor furniture and dreaming about long summer evenings. It's planning for pleasure during the grimmest months.
You're not just buying furniture; you're investing in future memories. Those impromptu Thursday night suppers outside because the weather's too good to waste. Weekend morning coffees in the sunshine. Birthday celebrations that spill from indoors to outdoors seamlessly because you've created a space that's actually inviting.
So whilst everyone else is still in full hibernation mode, you could be quietly getting ahead. Come spring, when the garden centres are heaving and delivery times are stretching into weeks, you'll already be sorted. Your outdoor space will be ready. And that first properly warm evening? You'll be the one firing up your pizza oven or lighting your fire pit whilst everyone else is still arguing about whether they need a six-seater or an eight-seater.
January planning means summer enjoying. It really is that straightforward.
